Kids, meet your new aquatic uncle

6 April 2006

with apologies to Mr. Calvino.

2006 has been a good year for vertebrate fossils. First Castorocauda overturned a number of long-held assumptions about mammal evolution. Then the loooong-necked sauropod Erketu and the crested tyrannosaur Guanlong entered the already stiff competition for most improbable-looking dinosaur.

Now Tiktaalik has slithered, or more probably flopped into the spotlight.

Lots more at Pharyngula and Lancelet.

Postscript:
A few omissions from my list

  • Effigia
  • Juravenator
  • and a brand new Oviraptorsaur from Utah
